Health Mural Project Training

One of the most effective modes of communicating health messages is via MURALS. It does not require words, an explanation, or even translation. Its message speaks for many years even without a health professional present.

Thanks to Peace Corps funding, I organized a training for 18 PCVs to learn skills equipping them to create health murals in their respective communities.

This booklet includes 10 gridded health mural options.

It rained almost 24/7 which resulted in 1) The group arriving soaking wet, 2) The Health Center Ambulance drove us (10 people at a time!) to and from the lodge/clinic each day, and 3) One mural location abandoned because its location would make the muralists rained upon.

Through the rain, a mural group is seen working on their mural.

Stuffed like sardines in the ambulance. That was a bumpy ride!

Stephanie Starch and Jen Vitello were our two trainers. Each of them studied Art and Color Theory in school.

Altogether 21 PCVs (including the 2 trainers) worked for 2 days to create 5 health murals.

My counterpart, Omar, helping a group paint
 And the final products:

1) Proper Handwashing

2) Nutrition/ Eat Healthy Foods!

3) Treat Diarrhoea- Sugar Salt Solution

4) Exclusive Breastfeeding

5) Road to Health Chart

Altogether this was a GREAT training. But this is just the beginning! Each PCV is going to create health murals in their OWN communities. So stay tuned!
